Soundset 09
Well it's all over and it's official: Soundset 2009 was sick. Kayd, my brother Arny, and I spent the day at Canterbury Park along with thousands of other followers of the local underground hip-hop scene. Let's just say Minnesota repped hard, and it was crazy to see so many legit artists perform in our own backyard.
Upon arrival at around 11:30 in the morning things were just getting started. The smell of bud filled the air and people were starting to crack open beers. Soundset's lineup was truly sick this year, as over 40 MC's had a chance to spit at some point. From local legends like Heiruspecs and Brother Ali to outsiders like Blueprint and Abstract Rude, Soundset kept things diverse. Of course, Atmosphere was there to wrap things up in style at the end of the day.
The turnout was pretty impressive, especially considering the fact that this was only the 2nd annual Soundset. Frankly, it doesn't look like turnout is going to diminish in the upcoming years, and we can only hope water is a little cheaper next time. Although the heat and lack of shade got annoying at times, the great music kept people going all day.
Kayd was especially excited when we had a chance to hear Cunninlynguists perform a sick set and me and Arny were floored by Immortal Technique's awesome performance, as expected. While electrical problems during Doom's set led to some disappointing moments, brilliant performances by Blue Scholars and I Self Devine more than made up for them.
I was more than happy to sport the MPLS shirt Kayd bought for me when we visited Fifth Element last week. To those who underestimate the breadth of the Minnesota hip-hop underground, hit up Soundset next year and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Mad props to Rhymesayers for putting together a terrific event.
Peace,
Jeet & Kayd
